Literacy Autobiography
I have always struggled with literacy growing up as a child. I started my foundation of literacy in a private school in Paterson. I was in that private school from pre-kindergarten to kindergarten. My experiences of literacy can be only compared to my learning of literacy from a private to a public school setting. I honestly don’t remember too much of literacy within my private school. It wasn’t really much of a priority from what I remember. When my parents decide to put me in public school that is when everything changed. In my first-grade class, I struggled with reading and writing. I had to get extra help within the classroom and sometimes get pulled out as well. I had to stay behind a year due to I was behind than the others in the class.
My parents had always been my supporters by providing paid tutors and willing to participate with extra help. My stepfather would sit down with me for hours when doing homework. I always dislike doing my literacy homework so he would force me to sit there to do it. I would be so upset, but now as I got older I understand why he pushed me so hard.
As I got older I enjoy reading books. It was my escape from reality when my family life wasn’t great during middle school. I didn’t start delving into literacy till around I would say 6th or 7th grade. I would have stacks of books in my room from the library and Barnes & Nobles. I enjoyed reading but never liked to write. I never liked to write due to never doing well in it. Whenever I had a paper to write I would wait until the last minute, because it was the least enjoyable thing to do. I tried to do creative writing, but I couldn’t get myself into it.
How I feel about literacy today is better than how I felt before. I still love to read and try to read books when I have extra time. My feelings surrounded writing has definitely gotten better. I try to push myself into being more creative with writing. I use literacy every day as a student and a teacher. As a student, literacy is important for me to understand what is the material given to me. I need to be able to read and write not only in general education classes but as well in my mathematics classes as well. AS a math major I still need to use literacy to help me comprehends the problems that are given to me. As a teacher, I try to instill a foundation of literacy to my students to help prepare them for kindergarten. Last year I worked in the PreK 4 classroom where I would help students learn how to write their names or topics they enjoyed about learning. We would do read alouds, listen readers, and small guided reading. Now I have been put into a 2-3-year-old room so there is a development difference, but I can still teach them literacy. I would try to show them how to hold the book and use my finger to help show that you read from left to right. We label everything in the room with words so I would ask them what is this and go through the spelling of it. Little things like this can make a huge difference within a student’s attitude towards literacy as they get older.

Interesting story. I often find many of us prefer reading over writing or vice versa but, in reality, they are so connected.
