AGREE: Breaking away from the traditional classroom

Students can’t learn from this system of sitting and listening to lectures in the classroom. Wirt was trying to break away this stigma of children always sitting down and doing work. This is not an effective way for the student’s learning process. They may be able to understand it at that point, but they might not be able to retain anything in the future. Wirt wanted “was for the kids to have a rich school experience so they were busy all the time and we're getting involved in things that would interest them”(p. 86). This is something ideal even in today’s school. We want c
hildren to be interactive and engaged in the classroom. They will not participate in the classroom if there’s no fun in the classroom. I think by breaking away from this rigid strategies can make students want to go to school more often.

ARGUE Becoming ‘Americanized’

Immigrants have to go to school and lose in touch with their own values and customs. The education system at this time wanted them to focus on America and their culture. I understand that children should learn about American culture. I think all cultures should be represented in the classroom. This also involves religion as well. At that time they didn’t consider other different religions holiday to celebrate in the classroom. The education system at that time only celebrated “American” holidays. This divide of culture and school can make students not want to go to school. How can a student participate in something where their own values and customs are not valued? I think with this rush of immigration can help the education system better if they embraced all these different cultures and religions instead of dismissing them.

ASSUME: IQ Tests

I assumed IQ tests were for students who are trying to further their education such as in high school or college. I never knew that they started testing at the age of five. That is crazy! How can you determine a child’s education their whole life from a test as young as five? This doesn’t take in account their home life. Some students may have opportunities to have academics at an early age while many didn’t have the same opportunity. I assumed that this IQ test was just to test their level of intelligence when they were older. This also doesn’t take in account for immigrants who maybe don’t understand English. This is a very biased test that doesn’t take into account many factors.

ASPIRE: Progressive Education

Gary schools were pushing for a progressive education in the 1900s This hope of progressive education was to get families and students involved to not think of other worries. As a student studying to teach one day want this still progressivism within schools today. I think in education today there are some schools who use this progressive approach, but not all. I still wish to be able to teach in a progressive district. This approach can help students learn better and want to have an education.

  1. Jasmine,

First of all, we have two topics related to each other, the I.Q. testing and immigrants, but in different categories and we even have the same I.Q. picture as well! Small word. You agreeing on breaking away from the traditional classroom states a valid point. I agree with you and how being stuck in a classroom can be very boring for a child. I remember when I was in 2nd grade, my entire classmates and I were all in trouble for not listening to our teachers and were placed on punishment for 1 week. We were not allowed to go outside and play during lunch or even switch classrooms to go to our electives like art, music, dance, etc. Instead the elective teachers came into our classrooms. We were all stuck in the same classroom for an entire week! I will never forget how boring it was on consistently learning the same thing over and over again. Everyone did not have the charisma to learn, but if we did not participate or act the way we were supposed to, our privileges would have never came back. The whole situation really humbled everyone in that class and reading your agreement reminded me of how lucky all of us were to be apart of such a developed education system that included many activities rather then just being placed into a room all day for an entire school year.

  2. Jasmine I agree when you said that not all students learn from just siting in a classroom and listening to the lectures. because I'm the type of student that learn when a teacher has a connection with their students. Coming up with different idea to get to know one another and not just showing up to class everyday talking to a book and telling us what to do. I understand that everyone learn at there own pace and their are many ways of teaching. But when the students have something to look forward to, it will make them want to show up to class everyday.

  3. I also agree with Elyssia and you about the traditional technique of teaching students of just sitting down and listening to lectures. It is important to not only educate the child but also go beyond and find a way for a child to have fun learning. I believe that if a child by having fun doing an activity at school for sure will not forget what the activity has taught him or her.
Also, I too did write about being progressive which is also an important factor to have in mind because it shows a student how to want more and always want to continue and with how jobs are being set up completing the bare minimum is not enough anymore

By the way, nice way of keeping it short and to the point (need to learn from you lol) and combining the pictures !!
